چکیده

The results of a benchmark experiment for transient eddy-current nondestructive evaluation are reported. The benchmark configuration corresponds to the canonical geometry of an air-cored probe coil positioned above a conductive plate containing a long back-face slot. The coil is excited by an exponentially-damped step function current and measurements are made of the change in the transient magnetic field due to the slot. The aim of the work is to provide experimental data for validation of theoretical models under development within the wider NDE community and to provide a common geometry against which the performance of a range of such models can be compared. A further aim of the work is to stimulate the ongoing development of quantitative methods in transient eddy-current research. RELEASE LIMITATION Approved for public release

QUALITY CONTROL OF PRECIPITATION HARDENED ALUMINIUM ALLOY PARTS VIA EDDY-CURRENT NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION

Precipitation hardening is the most common method in the strengthening of aluminium alloys. This method relies on the decrease of solid solubility with temperature reduction to produce fine precipitations which impede the movement of dislocations. The quality control of aluminium alloy specimens is an important concern of engineers. Among different methods, non-destructive techniques are the...

Design of Nondestructive System for Hardness of Carbonitrided Steel Parts ‎Using Eddy Current Testing Method: Case study on the Tappet Parts

In this paper, a non-destructive eddy current test system was designed to evaluate the surface hardness of the carbonitrided steel parts. For this purpose, various samples of the tappet were used after the surface hardening and grinding operations as control samples and, if necessary, were subjected to destructive and non-destructive tests. Microstructural studies were performed with a microsco...

Applications of Impedance Plane and Magnetic Differential Permeability in Microstructural Characterization of AISI D2 Tool Steel

Two nondestructive electromagnetic/magnetic techniques including hysteresis loop and eddy current methodologies have been used to characterize microstructural changes of AISI D2 cold work tool steel as a result of quench and tempering treatments. To measure the fraction retained austenite in quenched microstructure, six specimens were austenitized in the range  of 1000-1130 °C. Samples austenit...

Evaluation of the Characteristics of a Rotating Eddy-Current Probe for ECT using Edge FEM

In this paper, the evaluation of the characteristics of a new type rotating eddy-current probe for nondestructive Eddy-Current Testing (ECT) is carried out using 3-D edge-based FEM. The changes of the induced electromotive force are monitored for various inner and outer types of thin cracks inside the metal plate. It was veri ed that although the intensity of the signal obtained by this new typ...

Prediction and Analysis of Transient Eddy - Current Probe Signals

In eddy-current nondestructive evaluation, the electromagnetic field is usually excited by a probe carrying a time-harmonic current and flaw information inferred from the amplitude and phase of the probe signal. In principle, transient excitation of eddy-currents would seem to offer great advantages since the probe response contains the equivalent information of a spectrum of frequencies. This ...
